Début septembre, on a assisté à une véritable radiation cosmique à Point Ephémère.
Sur scène, le quatuor new-yorkais Frankie Cosmos, qui a sorti un des meilleurs albums twee pop – un sous-genre du rock alternatif – de 2016.
Mené par la charismatique Greta Kline, le groupe se distingue par un univers détonnant, mais aussi par une quantité astronomique de sons postés sur son Bandcamp.
Avant de se prendre un claque stellaire, on a eu l’occasion de se poser au bord du Canal Saint-Martin avec Greta (auteur-compositeur-interprète) pour parler de ses parents comédiens, de son prochain morceau sur les chiens et du futur album déjà en préparation.
GBHM: Why the name Frankie Cosmos ?
Greta: I always wanted to have a band because I didn’t have one, so I made up band names all the time. Frankie Cosmos was a nickname, so it became a band name very easily.
GBHM: Who gave you the nickname ?
Greta: My boyfriend, Aaron
GBHM: Who is ?
Greta: From Porches (laughs)
GBHM: You used to be in each other’s bands. Do you miss that ?
Greta: Yeah I do, they were sweet days. But it was exhausting. It was like having two jobs. Since making the decision, a huge weight has been lifted from our relationship. Now we have the time to hang out with each other rather than just band practice and touring. We had hardly spent more than two days apart for the first three years that we dated, so it was very intense. And we live together !
GBHM: Both of you have been having good years musically…
Greta: Yeah we have been touring a lot and that was kind of the plan, when we decided to stop playing in each other’s bands. It’s nice that both bands got a chance to tour as much we could and take every opportunity.
GBHM: Would you say that there’s some friendly rivalry between the tour bands ?
Greta: No, I don’t think there’s any. Porches are super different from us. Aaron might have some friendly rivalry but I try not to see it that way.
GBHM: What made you want to play music ? Your parents are actors and you were in films when you were a child, did you ever want to go down that route ?
Greta: I like to explain it to people as the fact that my mum has run a store for the past 10 years and I used to go work in the store afterschool and help out, but I never wanted to be someone who works in a store. I think the fact that they are both artists has definitely had an effect on me. The way that I view that art could be your job definitely shaped me subconsciously.
GBHM: Like Car Seat Headrest and Alex G, you have a lot of music on Bandcamp. Do you think that it is the best way to get noticed nowadays ?
Greta: I was putting stuff online for so long without anyone noticing. I think playing shows was the way of getting people to notice it; I was just shoving it down their throats basically. Now I view releasing music differently and I want to do it more carefully with the full band and studio-recorded albums.
GBHM: What Bandcamp release would you recommend that we listen to ?
Greta: I really like « Affirms Glinting« . It’s relatively new one.
GBHM: Now you are recording as a whole band, would you say that the process has changed ?
Greta: Totally. The way that I view writing and completing a song is really different. I used to record it as I wrote it, but now I spend a lot longer perfecting the songs in my mind, and then arrange it with the band. A longer process has definitely developed.
GBHM: Was that the process with « Next Thing » ?
Greta: Yeah it was the first full band thing. When we were arranging the songs for « Next Thing », we didn’t know that it was for a record, it was just for playing them live. Half of the album was me wanting to document how we were playing certain songs live. This one, we are going into it as songs that we want to record for the record.
GBHM: And what is the « next thing » for Frankie Cosmos ?
Greta: We are touring for quite a bit and then will make a new album called « New Album »… Haha, I’m just kidding. It’s called « Next, Next Thing »… Just kidding again. We are hopefully going to start working on a new record soon.
GBHM: Most of your songs around two minutes long. Is that conscious when you write ?
Greta: It is not super conscious. A couple of the songs that I have written for the next record are up to four minutes long, or past even ! (laughs)
GBHM: One of the themes on your records is age (« I’m 20 », « Young »), what themes will be on the next record ?
Greta: Kind of about figuring out who I am when I’m not home, especially while I am on tour or just travelling around. My changing feelings about New York. There is a song about leaving Porches too.
GBHM: Anything else about dogs (« If I Had a Dog ») ?
Greta: Not really, no dogs yet! It isn’t finished yet so there’s still room for songs about dogs. (laughs)
GBHM: Does French music influence you at all ?
Greta: Not directly but I have listened to my fair share of French pop. When I was younger, I was listening to a lot of Françoise Hardy and Chantal Goya. My band mate made me a mixtape of French pop when I was 15, right when I started writing songs. There are two New York musicians that I love that both have songs in French, Vagabon, she is my good friend and 100%.
GBHM: If you had to describe in three words, what would you say ?
Greta: Pretty, old and … cool. No ! Cool is a stupid word, I’ll say hip !

GBHM: Pourquoi Frankie Cosmos ?
Greta: J’ai toujours eu envie d’avoir un groupe. Et je m’imaginais le nom que je pourrais lui donner. Frankie Cosmos, c’était un surnom et c’est devenu naturellement le nom du groupe.
GBHM: Qui t’a donné ce surnom ?
Greta: Mon petit ami, Aaron
GBHM: Qui est ?
Greta: Le chanteur de Porches (rires)
GBHM: Tu as toi-même été bassiste de ce groupe, est-ce que ça te manque ?
Greta: Oui, c’était une période cool. Mais c’était fatiguant. C’est comme d’avoir deux jobs. Quand j’ai pris cette décision, notre relation a été soulagée d’un grand poids. Maintenant on a le temps de traîner ensemble au lieu d’être en répétition et en tournée. On a passé à peine plus de deux jours éloignés pendant les trois premières années de notre relation. C’était très intensif. On habite ensemble en plus !
GBHM: Les deux groupes ont eu une bonne année musicalement…
Greta: Oui, on a beaucoup tourné, c’était le plan quand on a décidé de ne plus faire partie de nos groupes respectifs. C’est génial que les deux groupes aient la chance de faire toutes les tournées possibles et de saisir chacune de ces occasions.
GBHM: Dirais-tu qu’il y a une rivalité amicale entre les deux groupes ?
Greta: Non je ne crois pas. Porches est vraiment différent de nous. Aaron pense peut-être qu’il y en a une, mais j’essaie de ne pas avoir cette mentalité.
GBHM: Pourquoi avoir choisi la musique ? Tes parents sont acteurs et tu jouais dans des films quand tu étais petite. Tu n’as jamais eu envie de les suivre ?
Greta: J’aime expliquer aux gens le fait que ma mère est propriétaire d’un magasin depuis dix ans. Je travaillais là-bas après les cours pour l’aider mais je n’ai jamais eu envie d’être assistante dans un magasin. Je pense que le fait qu’ils soient artistes a eu un effet sur moi, de manière inconsciente. Notamment, le fait d’avoir vu que cet art pouvait devenir un travail.
GBHM: Comme Car Seat Headrest et Alex G, tu as beaucoup de musique disponible sur Bandcamp. Penses-tu que c’est la meilleure manière de se faire remarquer de nos jours ?
Greta: Avec Bandcamp, je mettais des trucs en ligne sans que personne ne les remarque, en ne prenant pas en compte ce que les gens pouvaient penser. Mais faire des concerts était la meilleure manière de se faire remarquer pour imposer ma musique. Aujourd’hui, on fait de plus en plus attention à comment sortir notre musique.
GBHM: Lequel de tes albums sur Bandcamp est-ce qu’on devrait écouter ?
Greta: J’aime beaucoup « Affirms Glinting« . Il est relativement récent par rapport aux autres qui sont sur la plateforme.
GBHM: Etant donné que tu enregistres avec le groupe entier désormais, est-ce que le processus a changé ?
Greta: Absolument. Je n’écris plus de la même manière. Avant j’enregistrais en écrivant, mais maintenant je passe plus de temps à perfectionner les morceaux dans ma tête, avant de les arranger avec le reste du groupe. C’est plus long.
GBHM: Tu as procédé de cette manière pour l’album « Next Thing » ?
Greta: Oui, c’était le premier album avec le groupe en entier. Quand on a arrangé les chansons pour « Next Thing », on ne savait pas que c’était pour un album, c’était pour les jouer en live. L’album nous a permis de documenter comment on jouait certaines chansons. Pour le prochain, on va vraiment écrire des chansons en pensant à l’album.
GBHM: Qu’est-ce que c’est la « next thing » (prochaine étape) pour Frankie Cosmos ?
Greta: On va faire un album qui s’appelle « New Album »… Non je rigole. Il s’appelle « Next, Next Thing »… Je rigole encore une fois. Espérons qu’on commencera bientôt à travailler sur un second long format.
GBHM: La plupart de tes chansons durent deux minutes. C’est une volonté consciente de ta part ?
Greta : Je n’en suis pas vraiment consciente. Quelques chansons que j’ai écrites pour le prochain disque durent quatre minutes ou même plus ! (rires)
GBHM: Une des thématiques qui revient dans tes projets est l’âge (« I’m 20 », « Young »), quelle sera celle de ton prochain album ?
Greta: Par exemple tenter de comprendre qui je suis quand je ne suis pas chez moi, particulièrement quand je fais une tournée ou quand je suis en voyage. Mes sentiments par rapport à New York qui sont en train de changer. Il y a aussi une chanson sur quand j’ai quitté Porches.
GBHM: D’autres chansons sur les chiens (« If I Had a Dog ») ?
Greta: Pas encore ! Cet album n’est pas encore fini alors il reste encore de place pour les chansons sur les chiens. (rires)
GBHM: Est-ce que tu es influencé par des artistes français ?
Greta: Pas directement mais j’écoute pas mal de pop française. Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’écoutais souvent Françoise Hardy et Chantal Goya. Un ami m’a fait un mixtape de pop française quand j’avais 15 ans, c’était au moment où j’ai commencé à écrire des chansons. Il y a deux musiciens new-yorkais que j’adore qui ont composé en français : Vagabon, une bonne amie de moi, et 100%.
GBHM: Pour finir, la France en trois mots ?
Greta: Belle, vieille et … cool. Non ! Cool est un mot stupide, je dirai branchée !
